The Political Viewpoint

How shall we define the political dimension of abortion? Isn't there any possibility of an exception to the right to life? Isn't it essential for a democratic society to promote the liberty of individuals to a maximum degree?
Doesn't tolerance mean that all opinions are respectable, including those of advocates of abortion and euthanasia? Why does a state have a role to play regarding abortion? Doesn't the taking of the life of an innocent reveal a perversion of power?
If the threat of totalitarianism were real, would it not be perceived by everybody and would they not raise a general outcry?
